MDF

MDF — one of the most common materials used in furniture. Discover its properties and advantages.
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is today one of the most widely used materials for kitchen and built-in furniture fronts. Its smooth, uniform surface is ideal for painting, giving an almost unlimited choice of color and finish.
What is MDF and how is it made?
MDF is made by breaking wood down into individual fibres, mixing them with resin (usually urea-formaldehyde) and hot-pressing between heated plates. A typical composition is about 82% wood fibre, ~10% resin and a little wax. The result is a dense, uniform board with none of the knots of natural wood. Standard furniture-grade MDF has a density of ~700-800 kg/m³, with a face layer denser than the core — so after milling and painting the surface is perfectly even.
Why is MDF best for painted fronts?
The smooth, uniform surface takes primer and paint beautifully — any RAL or NCS color, matte or gloss. MDF is far more stable than solid wood: it moves only ~0.05% per 1% change in moisture content, versus up to 0.5% for natural wood. That same homogeneity lets MDF be milled into classic and neoclassic profiled fronts, which laminated board cannot match.
What are the drawbacks of MDF?
Standard MDF is sensitive to prolonged moisture and direct water — so quality edge sealing matters, especially around the sink and dishwasher. The board is heavy, and a damaged painted surface is hard to repair invisibly because the porous core is exposed.
What is moisture-resistant MDF?
Moisture-resistant MDF (MR-MDF) is treated during manufacture to better withstand humidity and short-term water — so it's recommended for kitchen and bathroom fronts. Its green tint is only an identification convention, not a guarantee; it is moisture-resistant but not waterproof, and edges should still be sealed.
How to care for MDF fronts
Clean with a soft cloth and a neutral cleaner; avoid abrasive powders, steel wool and excess water, especially at the joints. On gloss surfaces use microfibre.
Futurium and MDF
Futurium makes painted MDF fronts in RAL/NCS colors, with Austrian EGGER boards for the cabinet body. As alternatives we offer Italian CLEAF fronts and aluminum profile with glass. Our designer-constructor at the showroom will help you choose the right one.
